Cognitive Behaviour Therapy - CBT
Judith Pearce: Cognitive Behaviour Therapist (CBT)

Judith is an experienced Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with over 20 years professional NHS experience.

What is CBT ?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is an evidence based approach to managing thoughts which influence feelings and behaviors.  As a treatment it has been subject to rigorous applied research and major research reviews over decades and is Recognised as an effective treatment for a range of common psychological and emotional difficulties.  Its research base has led to it being approved by the government’s official health watchdog, the National Institute of Clinical Health Excellence (NICE).

In CBT, you learn skills that you practice with the therapist. It's like learning and sharing experience with a seasoned tutor. You learn skills that empower you to overcome your issues.
Unlike other counseling treatments CBT focuses on addressing problems you have now rather than issues from the past. The focus is on developing practical skills to support you on a daily basis.

here.
How long does CBT take?
Usually between 6 weeks and 6 months, yet many people see dramatic progress in only a few weeks. However like any skill, the more practice and support you get, the more beneficial your sessions will be.
Will I be able to discontinue my medication?
Many people find they get excellent results with a combination of CBT and medication while others prefer CBT alone. Clients wishing to make changes to their medication should always discuss this first with their GP.
Are there any disadvantages to CBT?
To benefit from CBT you need to commit yourself to the process. A therapist can help and advise you, but cannot make your problems go away without your co-operation. Due to the nature of CBT, it may not be suitable for people who have more complex mental health needs or learning difficulties.
Some critics of CBT argue that because the therapy only addresses current problems and focuses on very specific issues, it does not address the possible underlying causes of mental health. CBT focuses on the client's capacity to change themselves (their thoughts/feelings/behavior) and does not directly address wider problems in systems or families that often have a significant impact on an individuals health or well being. That is not to say that the changes and benefits you experience, can't enable you to do so.
Note: CBT is a very directive approach.  As with any approach, this works better for some than others. We have yet to discover the panacea for all ailments. It’s your choice.
Eclectic Approach
It’s worth remembering that Kochin associates offer a range of in-house confidential change techniques meaning you can always discus how we can interweave your CBT with coaching, Hypnosis and NLP.
